Dubai Airport Terminal 1 vs 2 vs 3: Does Terminal Affect Your Exchange Rate?
We've written before about how Changi's terminal genuinely affects your exchange rate options. Dubai is different — and the honest answer here might save you from expecting something that isn't really the case.
The honest answer: terminal doesn't change your rate much at DXB
Unlike Changi, where Terminal 2 and 3 genuinely have more competing counters than Terminal 1, DXB's three terminals all have a broadly similar mix of options — Travelex and Al Ansari Exchange both operate across multiple terminals, and bank ATMs (Emirates NBD, FAB, ADCB, Mashreq) are distributed across all three. There isn't a clear "better terminal for rates" the way BKK has its basement floor or Changi has its terminal split.
What terminal actually determines at DXB: which airline you're flying
This is the genuinely useful thing to know, and it's not about rates at all:
- Terminal 3 (T3) — Emirates' flagship terminal, handling all Emirates flights including the A380 fleet
- Terminal 1 (T1) — the multi-carrier international terminal, handling most non-Emirates international airlines (Lufthansa, Delta, Singapore Airlines, British Airways, and many others)
- Terminal 2 (T2) — dedicated to flydubai and smaller regional/low-cost carriers
T1 and T3 are connected internally, airside — so if you're transiting between Emirates and another major international carrier, you likely won't even need to leave the secure zone. T2 is a genuinely separate facility, connected to the rest of the airport by a free shuttle bus (roughly 15–20 minutes) — worth knowing if you're flying flydubai or a regional carrier, since you're effectively in a different building.
So which terminal will you actually be in?
- Flying Emirates → you'll land at T3
- Flying most other major international airlines → likely T1
- Flying flydubai or a smaller regional carrier → T2, and budget extra time if you need to reach the main terminal complex
What's consistent across all three
- The AED/USD peg (3.6725) works the same everywhere — use it to check any quoted rate, regardless of terminal
- Both Travelex and Al Ansari Exchange have a real presence across multiple terminals, not concentrated in just one
- Bank ATMs are available in all three terminals
The takeaway
- Terminal doesn't meaningfully change your exchange rate options at DXB, unlike Changi
- Terminal does determine which airline you're flying and whether you need a shuttle (T2 specifically)
- Check the AED peg regardless of which terminal you land in — that's your real tool for judging a fair rate here, not terminal choice
Knowing which terminal you'll actually land in — based on your airline — is more useful for planning your walk than expecting a "best terminal for rates" that doesn't really exist at DXB the way it does elsewhere.
Need mobile data too?
Sorting out currency is only half the "landing prepared" checklist — most travelers also need mobile data the moment they touch down, for maps, ride-hailing apps, and checking in with home. Rather than pushing one option, here are three eSIM providers worth comparing before your trip:
- Roamable — travel eSIM plans covering most major destinations
- Strong eSIM — global digital SIM, 190+ countries
- BitJoy — travel eSIM with flexible plans and crypto payment options
As with currency exchange, rates and coverage vary — worth a quick compare based on your destination and how much data you'll actually need.
