India Cash Declaration Rules: What You Can (and Can't) Carry
There's no upper limit on foreign currency you can bring into India — but you must declare it above certain thresholds. Indian rupee notes have a much stricter, low limit that applies whether you're arriving or leaving.
Arriving in India
You need to file a Currency Declaration Form (CDF) with Indian Customs if:
- You're carrying foreign currency cash over USD 5,000, or
- Your total foreign exchange (cash plus traveler's cheques combined) exceeds USD 10,000
Below these amounts, no form is required. Above them, there's no maximum — you just have to declare it.
Leaving India (Indian residents)
Indian residents may carry up to USD 3,000 equivalent in foreign currency cash per trip. Any remaining amount needs to be on a forex card, traveler's cheques, or similar — within the RBI's broader remittance limits for the year.
Indian rupee notes specifically
This is stricter than foreign currency: Indian residents may carry up to ₹25,000 in rupee notes in or out of India per trip. Non-residents are not permitted to carry Indian rupee notes across the border at all.
What happens if you don't declare
Undeclared amounts above these thresholds can be seized, along with financial penalties under FEMA. Declaring isn't about being penalized — a stamped CDF is your proof the money entered legally, which matters if you want to convert or take it back out later.
Always check the current thresholds directly on the RBI or Indian Customs website before you travel, since these rules can be updated.
The takeaway
- No cap on foreign currency into India, but declare above $5,000 cash or $10,000 total
- Indian residents leaving India: up to $3,000 cash, rest via card/cheques
- INR notes: ₹25,000 limit for residents, not permitted at all for non-residents
- Verify current thresholds on official RBI/Customs sources before you fly
Need mobile data too?
Sorting out currency is only half the "landing prepared" checklist — most travelers also need mobile data the moment they touch down, for maps, ride-hailing apps, and checking in with home. Rather than pushing one option, here are three eSIM providers worth comparing before your trip:
- Roamable — travel eSIM plans covering most major destinations
- Strong eSIM — global digital SIM, 190+ countries
- BitJoy — travel eSIM with flexible plans and crypto payment options
As with currency exchange, rates and coverage vary — worth a quick compare based on your destination and how much data you'll actually need.
