Bali (DPS) Airport Currency Exchange, Counters and ATMs

There is only one commercial airport in Bali. Located close to Denpasar, it is called I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS). There are two terminals within the airport, one for domestic flights and one for international flights. Most Indian travellers to Bali will land in the International Terminal. On arrival you can expect to exchange at a counter or ATM in the arrivals area. Knowing what options are available can be helpful.

The information below lists only confirmed exchange counters and machines we have found from multiple sources or from their own page. If there are discrepancies we have mentioned this. We couldn’t find any specific rates for any counters at Bali Airport so we haven’t listed any ‘best’ counters or how much worse they are compared to the city.

JesTiny Guides are not an exchange service, we do not sell currency and aren’t paid by any currency exchange counters or banks to list them.

Currency exchange counters

International Terminal – arrivals

JAV Money Changer (Officially named Jaya Amerta Valasindo) – Located inside the International Arrival Terminal pickup zone. This is where drivers and hotel transfers wait for passengers. A listing for the counter says they offer a 24 hour service and 30 foreign currencies (Please check before travelling).

Wahana Money Changer – Located within the international arrivals. There are conflicting times for this counter. One source says 5:00AM to 1:00AM and another source on a map says 8:00AM to 9:00PM. So we can’t confirm what times they are open and recommend you check on arrival.

International Terminal – departures

GAV Money Changer – From their own website there is a branch available at Gate 02. Open from 6:00AM to 12:00AM (Bali Time/WITA). This is useful if you want to exchange any leftover rupiah on your way home. (Please check before travelling).

Domestic Terminal

We couldn’t confirm any currency exchange counters in the Domestic Terminal. If travelling in from India and connecting to another island in Indonesia we recommend you exchange any currency you need in the International Terminal.

Best and worst

We aren’t recommending any best counters. We couldn’t find any specific rates for JAV, Wahana & GAV so we can’t fairly recommend any best. We also couldn’t find any reports to recommend avoiding any of them.

What we can say:

Several travel guides mention that the rates at the airport in Bali are generally worse than money changers in the town. However none of them had specific ways to measure this.

There are licensed and unlicensed money changers in Bali. Authorised money changers are those who have been licensed by Bank Indonesia. These are known as ‘KUPVA’ in Indonesia. An airport counter is a fixed, visible business, which is a different risk from a street booth with a sign showing great rates.

As you don’t know the rate beforehand it’s a good idea to compare. Ask each counter what the final amount will be for the exact amount you want to exchange. Compare this to the live mid-market rate on your phone. For an explanation of what this is please see our mid-market rate guide.

Most people will want to exchange a small amount of cash at the airport to cover your first taxi/ride, sim card and meal. Once you’ve seen the rates in the town you can decide how much to exchange.

ATMs and cards

There are several sources saying there are ATMs for international travellers in the arrivals area after customs. These will be from major Indonesian banks such as BCA, BNI & Bank Mandiri. The exact locations and times can vary (Please check before travelling).

When using an ATM or card abroad there are 3 key things to consider:

  1. Choose Rupiah. If the ATM/card machine asks if you’d like to be charged in Indian Rupees decline and choose IDR. This is known as Dynamic Currency Conversion. Both Visa and Mastercard state you should be given the choice. Usually you’ll pay more if you pay in your home currency. See our DCC guide.
  2. Know what your card charges. Your Indian bank or forex card may charge a fee and have a margin on the rate. In addition to this, the ATM owner may charge a fee. See our ATM vs Forex Card guide.
  3. Check the screen. Always check what you’re being charged before confirming. If something doesn’t look right cancel.

Steps to get your first rupiah

  1. Pass Immigration and collect your bags from the International Terminal.
  2. Pass Customs.
  3. Look for the bank ATMs in the arrivals area after customs. Choose a major bank and choose rupiah.
  4. If you’d rather exchange cash look for Wahana Money Changer in the arrivals area or JAV Money Changer in the pickup zone.
  5. Ask for the final amount for the exact amount you want to exchange. This can be done in writing or on a calculator.
  6. Compare this to the mid-market rate on your phone. If there is a large difference only exchange what you need for the next few hours.
  7. Count your notes at the counter and keep your receipt.

If you’re connecting to a domestic flight

There is a new International to Domestic bridge available from 17th August 2026. However this is currently only available for certain airlines and passengers with valid connections. Airline and airport staff will direct you to this if applicable. (Please check before travelling). If you don’t qualify you will exit via the usual method. Pass Immigration, Baggage & Customs and head to the Domestic Terminal to check in. Whatever method you use we recommend exchanging your money in the International Terminal as we couldn’t confirm any counters on the domestic side.

Getting into town from the airport

We couldn’t find any official pricing however here are some prices from 2026 (Please check before travelling).

You’ll pay before leaving so have some Rupiah to hand or ask if they take cards.

Cash vs card in Bali

There are many places in Bali where you can use cards & QR.

Misconceptions about currency at Bali airport

Misconception 1: ‘Don’t exchange anything as it’s always a rip-off.’

Whilst several guides mention that rates at the airport in Bali are worse than in town it’s a reasonable expectation. However you may end up paying more for a bad taxi deal or having to use your card if you don’t have any Rupiah. It’s often worth exchanging a small amount. The more you exchange the more you’ll pay due to the worse rates.

Misconception 2: ‘24 hour means I can exchange anytime.’

Whilst JAV’s listing says they are open 24 hours listings can be out of date. Wahana have varying times depending on the source. If you arrive late you can use the ATM after customs. Have a second card just in case.

Misconception 3: ‘It’s safer to pay in Indian Rupees.’

Whilst you’ll see a familiar number the rate has been set by whoever owns the machine. This is DCC and you’ll usually pay more. Choose Rupiah.

Misconception 4: ‘Any money changer with a good rate board is fine.’

A rate board does not guarantee you’ll receive that rate. Our scams guide covers the common patterns: a quoted rate that doesn’t match the slip, swapping notes, fast counting & zero commission signs. At any counter ask for the final amount and count the notes yourself.

Scams and mistakes with currency in Bali

For Indian travellers: how much foreign cash you can buy

If you’re an Indian resident you can purchase up to USD 3,000 in foreign currency notes & coins per visit (Exceptions apply for a few countries not relevant to Bali). The rest of your travel money can be on a forex card, travellers cheques or bank draft. This is the maximum amount a bank or money changer in India will sell you for your trip. For full details please see our Cash Declaration in India guide.

A simple guide to currency on day one

We recommend doing the following:

  1. Before travelling – Pay the levy online, turn on international use for your cards and have a small amount of cash from India.
  2. At the airport – Exchange enough for your ride, sim card & small expenses for day one. Reported prices are approximately IDR 100,000 – 200,000 to Kuta/Seminyak and IDR 300,000 – 400,000 to Ubud. Most people will want a few hundred thousand.
  3. Don’t exchange more – Rates are reported to be worse in the airport. The more you exchange the more you’ll pay.
  4. Later – Use cards & QR where possible. Exchange more at a bank ATM or licensed money changer. Count all notes.
